Director of Bands


Ryan DDirectorukes joined the Habersham Central High School Fine Arts Faculty as the Director of Bands in 2007. Under Mr. Dukes’ leadership, the HCHS Band program has grown to over 180 members participating in three concert bands, jazz band, many different chamber ensembles, Indoor Drumline, Winand the award winning Marching Band of Blue.  

A native of Nicholson, Georgia, Dukes graduated with Honors from Jackson County Comprehensive High School in 1989. He received his Bachelor of Music Education with a concentration in Trumpet from Augusta College. In 2001, he completed his Master of Science Degree with an emphasis in the Foundations of Leadership from Troy State University.  

Mr. Dukes has experience as a performer with the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, the Augusta Concert Band, Savannah River Winds, The Northwinds Concert Band, Men in Brass (Brass Quintet), Sophisticated Swing Big Band, The Toccoa Symphony, Toccoa Jazz Ensemble, The Augusta Symphony, and The Augusta Jazz Project. He has also performed with many Jazz greats such as Maynard Ferguson, Ed Shaughnessy, Bill Watrous, Willie Thomas, Phil Driscoll, Peter Cristlieb, Vaughn Nark, Don Menza, Cecil Welch, and Wynton Marsalis. Mr. Dukes is an active clinician and adjudicator.  

Mr. Dukes is in his twenty-seventh year of teaching where he has taught at all levels of public education: one year of elementary music, three years of middle school band, and twenty-two years of high school band. He is affiliated with professional organizations that include:  Phi Mu Alpha, American School Band Directors Association, National Band Association, National Association for Music Educators, Georgia Music Educators Association, National School Band Directors Nation Association, Professional Association for Georgia Educators, Georgia Music Educators Association, and Association for Curriculum and Development. He has been nominated for Who's Who in America, Who's Who Among American Teachers, and Who's Who Among Professionals.

He resides in Clarkesville, Georgia with his wife Nora, an elementary music teacher. Mr. Dukes has three children: Brendan, a third year Medical student at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, Katherine, a Music Therapy Intern at the Music Therapy Center of California in San Diego, California, and Cecilia, a Freshman Dance Major at Brenau University, in Gainesville, Georgia.
